The Do’s and Don’ts of Color

We loved perusing the “do’s and don’ts” of color that HGTV shared.  First, they shared not to overlook the basics.   Know the basics of the color wheel and which colors complement each other.  Next, they shared not to forget the scheme: 60-30-10.  Divide your color choices into percentages- 60 percent is a dominant color, 30 percent is a secondary color, and 10 percent is the accent color.

Additionally, don’t ignore the lighting. It will change the color at different times of the day.  Remember that neutral does not have to mean beige!  It just needs to be a balance of warm and cool tones – it can be a red, green, silver, or blue.  Too many of the wrong colors together can be a disastrous look. Follow a color scheme of complementary or monochromatic to achieve the most success with your look.  Be careful how you incorporate color trends into any space.  Instead of furniture, think about using pillows, rugs, or fabrics that can be easily changed if you tire of the shade. And, lastly, don’t be too gender specific – you don’t want a room to feel too girly or manly.  Find the right balance!
